Women and Health

Women have a pivotal role in the future of humanity. Women today have reached certain heights. She is a good homemaker and a responsible person at her work place. There are many health issues that a woman undergoes in her lifetime but most often these health problems are not taken seriously until and unless the disease reaches its critical stage. To a certain extent the disease can be extinguished but the thing is one need to pay attention even for a minute pain. Most often its seen among women that they are prone to back pain, headache, lumps in the body parts, leg pain etc. When it lessens they get engaged in their household activities as usual. The one thing a woman has to be very careful about is when the pain in the body occurs frequently don’t just discard it; rather consult a physician about the issue. Just one step is enough. Otherwise lack of attention may lead us to suffer from more inconveniences and gives way to many serious health issues. So what we have to do is we should take care of our own health issues. 

In the life of every human being s/he has to pass through several stages. As we are dealing with women we will see for the health issues and bodily changes related to females at each stages – right from infancy to old age. 


What a woman should know? 
Some common problems faced by women


1. Back Pain 

Back pain is a common health issue faced by women. It may occur due to many reasons. Sometimes may be due to the way of walking, wearing high-healed sandals, too much of work etc.are some of the reasons. Ayurveda sees back pain as a symptom of disease. The body stature, monthly menstrual cycle, pregnancy etc also results in back pain. The diseases or inconveniences happening in back bone, thighs etc lead to blood pressure. The excess fat, too much of cough, accidents etc are yet another reasons. There are certain other reasons like – weakness in uterus, lungs and other internal body weakness that results in back pain

Remedial Measures

  • The back ailment is treated according to the disease. If the back pain is treated according to the correct/actual reason then the medicines will impart quick relief.

  • Straighten your back while resting. Its better if you sleep on a wooden cot. Don’t put any mattress over it. Just cover your cot with bed sheet.

  • Regular exercise, which relieves back pain is good.

  • Avoid eating foods, which causes constipation.

  • Avoid cholesterol rich food and have balanced diet.

  • Do not carry heavy things. If you want to take any object from the floor bend your knees rather than bending your backbone. Sit on your legs and then take the object. While lifting the object force will be on legs rather than on your back. 

  • Some herbal decoctions are to be taken when you have back pain.

  • Rasthaspathakam Kashayam – 50 ml every day morning and evening. 1 hour prior to your breakfast and dinner. Take any of there 2 herbal capsules – kaishora gulgul or yograj gulgul.

  • Ayurvedic oil -“Prabhanjanthavimarditha thylam” is to be applied over the affected parts and wash it off after one hour. The pain deteriorates.

  • Apply dhanwanthari thylam on your back and sweat yourself. It’s good for back pain.

2. Arthritis

Pain occurs in body due to different reasons. All types of diseases/pains are treated after culling out the main reasons behind it. The pains may occur for various reasons. There are some common reasons related to arthritic problems. They are obesity, unhealthy dietary habits, lack of exercise etc.

Remedial Measures

  • Treatment varies according to the disease symptoms. For every arthritic pain it is not good to apply oils. After seeing for the painful conditions one should apply the thylams.

  • Avoid drinking milk.

  • Have vitamin C rich foods like orange, gooseberry, guava, lemon juice etc. Also include papaya, mango, carrot etc in your food.

  • Include more green vegetables in your diet.

3. Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease, which occurs in people above 40 years of age in which the knee bone pains much. Those who work standing for long hours, diabetic patients and obese persons are affected by knee pain.

Reasons: Fractures, arthritis etc are some common reasons. It may also occur if you work too much. 

Remedial Measures

  • Avoid walking heights.

  • Doing swedhana according to pain is good.

  • Tying herbal band-aid on the affected part is good for health.

4. Hair Fall

Falling of hair is very common among women especially after pregnancy. 

Reasons: Lack of calcium, iron, vitamin, sleep after pregnancy, lack of healthy diet etc.may result in hair fall.

Remedial Measures

  • Intake of necessary vitamins and proteins through healthy foods.

  • Drink 25 ml of bhringarajasavam twice a day.

  • Luke warm coconut oil and massage it over your scalp.

  • Use herbal thylams for your hair.

5. Menstrual Pain

There are many inconveniences that a woman undergoes before the menstrual cycle. It may be called as pre-menstrual syndrome. Pain in the lower abdomen, back pain, headache, leg pain are some physical problems faced by women during the time and some mental problems are excess anger, eagerness, irritation, sadness, anxiety, easily prone to cry, absent-mindedness, forgetfulness etc.

Reasons

  • Difference in the hormone counting,

  • Drawback in the function of uterus

Remedial Measures

  • It is better to do some exercises 2 or 3 days prior to menstrual cycle.

  • During the pain it’s better to keep hot water bag over your abdomen so as to lessen your pain. Or else you can use capped glass bottles filled with hot water in place of hot water bag.

  • During the menstrual cycle days ,bath in lukewarm water.

  • Avoid drinks like – tea, coffee, colas, chocolates etc.

  • Lessen the intake of too much of sweet and spicy dishes.

  • You can have fruits, vegetables, fish, chicken etc.

  • When the pain begins, fry 5-gram shtakuppa in 200 ml water and drink it.

For excess menstrual flow

  • If there is excess menstrual flow in the first day itself keep folded wet clothes over your abdomen.

  • Have a small mixture of sugar and honey.

  • Soak some saidatetuisalin (kurunthotti) roots in milk and make its paste and mix it with honey and have it.

6. Menopause

With the advent of menopause many inconveniences trouble the women. They feel excess sweating, tiredness, fainting, excess heartbeat, too much of curiosity, anger, lack of sleep, headache and depression.

Reasons

  • Lack of estrogen

  • Removal of uterus.

Remedial Measures

To get rid of the excess body temperature it is advisable to have bath only after applying medicinal oils (thylams) over the whole body.

To lessen the mental conflict its good to have shirodhara.
