A MARRIAGE OF AYURVEDA AND ALLOPATHY
FOR THE WELLNESS OF MAN
Sunesh B.
The traditional Ayurveda
is increasingly getting accepted as a complementary medicinal system with several allopathic Hospitals in the country entering into tie-ups with noted ayurveda treatment centres to draw on the strengths of these two systems for the benefits of patients.
The Chennai city-based major ayurveda group Cholayil Sanjeevanam has already tied up with leading allopathy hospitals here such as Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Hospital, Porur, Dr Cherian's Frontier Lifeline Pvt ltd, Nichani Hospital, Royapuram and M V Diabetics to provide ayurvedic, naturopathy and yoga treatments for the patients referred to from these hospitals. Another prominent allopathic hospital in the city has also started their own ‘wellness clinic' in its premises to give special alternative treatments for the needy patients.
Some of the major ayurvedic brands in the country such as Kottakkal Aryavydyasala and Coimbatore Aryavydyasala have been regularly getting references from allopathic hospitals for therapies in ayurveda.
"Most of the cases referred to us from allopathic hospitals are for pre- and-post surgical care. Now, people have recognized that ayurveda was more effective for some diseases such as ulcers, arthritis and sleeplessness. We are not claiming that all diseases could be cured using ayurveda. But the fact is ayurveda could be used more effectively, if it was complemented with diagnostic methods of the modern medicinal systems," savs AV Anoop, Director of Cholayil Sanjeevnam. He said there should not be any bias between the systems of treatments, and instead the endeavor should be to find out how these could be used for the benefit of patients. The better way is to synergise them, he said.
In Dr Cherian's hospital, doctors from Cholayil Sanjeevani would also monitor the patients after surgery. They help the patients to relax their muscles by giving instructions on conventional treatments such as breathing exercises, naturopathic diet methods and other yoga practices. Cholayil Sanjeevani is a sister concern of the Cholayil group, the makers of Medimix soaps.
PT Chacko, chief medical officer of Cholavil Sanjeevani said that there has been an attitudinal change among both ayurvedic and allopathic doctors and they are now ready to work together using effectiveness of both the systems.
