Therapeutic Vomiting
The pre treatment is followed by the purgation or purification therapy. Purification is done in two ways – Emesis (Vamanam) and Medicated enema or decoction (Vasti). This is done for three days.
Emesis (Vamanam)
In this process excited and vitiated humors are removed from the upper part of the body by way of vomiting. Vomiting is induced with herbal emetic substances for the purpose of eliminating vitiated Kapha and Pitta. Emesis is effective in the treatment of disorders like asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, indigestion, epilepsy, excessive salivation and diseases in fatty tissue and muscular tissue like haemorrhoids, tumors of fat and muscle.
Methodology: After completing the preliminary procedures of oleation and fomentation patient should take rest. Adequate rest and sleep should be encouraged in the evening prior to the purification procedure and should be given food preparations which include sesame or other oils that aggravate kapha. The patient thus prepared is asked to drink four to eight cups of warm milk, sugar cane juice, licorice tea, or buttermilk within 15 to 30 minutes. The quantity should be given till the patient’s stomach is completely full. The patient is then given a proper dose of appropriate emetic herbs or drugs.
